Real Project: 220-Key Hotel HVAC Design

PTAC/PTHP guestroom conditioning, corridor pressurization, a diversified central plant for public spaces, and the standing tension between guest comfort control and energy management.

The project brief: a 260,000-square-foot, 220-key full-service hotel — a building that is really two HVAC problems in one, a large population of independently rented, independently controlled guestroom zones, and a smaller set of large, high-occupancy public spaces (restaurant, ballroom, pool) that need a conventional central plant.

This module walks the whole design the way a real hospitality mechanical engineer would: the worked PTHP selection and ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation calculation behind each guestroom, why guestroom ventilation air is delivered through a central corridor makeup air system rather than through each unit's own sleeve damper, how corridor pressurization contains odor migration and impedes smoke during a fire, the N+1 central plant sizing for the shared public spaces, and the specific tension between a guest's expectation of instant, exact thermostat control and a hotel's energy management system's incentive to set back an unoccupied room.
