Most of this program's later calculations — a shaft's required diameter, a gear tooth's root stress, a flywheel's stored energy — start from a free-body diagram and an equilibrium equation written correctly in this module. This module builds that foundation deliberately: how to isolate a body and replace every contact with the force it applies, how equilibrium determines whether a problem is even solvable by statics alone, and how moments, centroids, and friction combine to reduce a real structure or mechanism to something you can actually calculate.
By the end of this module you should be able to explain, from first principles, why a spinning gyroscope precesses instead of simply tipping over when torqued — a question Module 5's flywheel content and Module 6's rotating-equipment content both assume you can already answer.
