Module 13 · Reliability & Maintenance

Reliability & Maintenance

Preventive and predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, vibration analysis, lubrication, root cause analysis, and asset management — how designed-and-built equipment stays running for decades instead of just for its first year.

Module 12 covered how mechanical systems are built and sized; this module covers what keeps them running. Reactive, preventive, predictive, and reliability-centered maintenance strategies are compared failure-mode by failure-mode, then condition-monitoring technologies — vibration, oil analysis, thermography, ultrasonics — are examined in the detail needed to actually read a spectrum, an oil report, or a thermal image rather than just recognize the term.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a bearing fault frequency shows up in oil analysis before it shows up in vibration, why re-greasing with the wrong thickener type causes premature failure, and how a fatigue fracture's beach marks point to a completely different fix than an overload fracture's single ductile break.
