How Engineers Create and Read Mechanical Drawings

Assembly and detail drawings, section and exploded views, GD&T, welding symbols, surface finish symbols, bills of materials, and mechanical schematics — what each sheet shows, what it deliberately leaves out, and the questions a working engineer asks reading one for the first time.

Every sheet type in a mechanical drawing package exists because a different reader needs a different slice of the same design, and none of them is a complete picture on its own. This module walks through each sheet an engineer actually encounters — what it's built to communicate, what it's deliberately silent on, and the specific questions that separate someone fluently reading a set from someone technically parsing symbols one at a time. Module 10's tolerance-analysis and optimization content shows up here directly, applied to how those decisions actually get drawn, dimensioned, and toleranced.

This is also the module that walks through a real GD&T position-tolerance calculation with a maximum material condition bonus, a real fillet-weld size derived from an actual joint load, and a real bill-of-materials quantity roll-up through a multi-level assembly — not just definitions, but the arithmetic each symbol and callout is actually built on.
