Intrusion Detection

Door and window contacts, PIR/microwave/dual-technology motion sensors, glass-break and vibration detection, zone configuration and alarm panel architecture, and the verification strategies that separate a well-engineered system from a chronic false-alarm liability.

Intrusion detection only watches while it is armed, and unlike Module 4's access control it never evaluates a credential — it senses motion, contact, breakage, or vibration in a space that is supposed to be empty. This module builds the sensor layer from the ground up: why a contact, a PIR, a dual-technology motion sensor, and a glass-break detector each answer a different physical question, how zone type and panel architecture turn raw sensor state into a meaningful alarm, and why false-alarm reduction is a core engineering deliverable rather than an afterthought.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a dual-technology sensor's AND logic solves a problem neither PIR nor microwave solves alone, and why sequential and video verification are what actually keep a real intrusion from being lost in a sea of nuisance alarms — the same false-alarm engineering discipline Module 6's perimeter detection content applies again outdoors.
