Module 12 · Storage Systems

Storage Systems

Video storage architecture — NVR, server-based VMS, and cloud/VSaaS — the variables that drive storage consumption, calculating storage capacity from camera count, resolution, frame rate, and retention period, and RAID/redundancy for video storage.

This module covers the three storage architectures a real deployment chooses among — purpose-built NVR, independently scalable server-based VMS, and cloud/VSaaS or hybrid — and the four variables (resolution, frame rate, compression, scene motion) plus recording mode and retention period that actually determine how much storage a system needs.

A full worked capacity calculation scales from a single camera's daily data volume up to a 64-camera deployment's total requirement, and RAID 5/6/10 redundancy is covered alongside the plain but commonly misunderstood fact that RAID protects against a drive failure, not a fire, theft, or ransomware event — which is exactly what offsite archival exists to cover.
