Sterilization is fundamentally a statistical process — microbial inactivation under heat, radiation, or chemical exposure follows exponential first-order kinetics, which is why sterility is defined not as a guarantee of zero organisms but as a Sterility Assurance Level, typically 10⁻⁶ — and this module builds that SAL framework before covering the three dominant industrial sterilization methods: ethylene oxide for heat- and moisture-sensitive devices, gamma irradiation for bulk-processed disposables, and steam autoclaving for reusable metal instruments.
It then covers sterile barrier packaging validation — the seal integrity and material testing that ensures a device stays sterile from the point of sterilization through the point of use — and closes on matching sterilization method to material and device design, directly setting up the worked EtO validation protocol built in Project 5.
