Pacemaker pacing modes and the NBG code, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, mechanical versus bioprosthetic heart valves, and coronary stents.

A pacemaker's function is simple to state — deliver a pulse strong enough to depolarize cardiac tissue when the heart's intrinsic rhythm fails — but the clinical logic governing when and where that pulse fires is standardized through the five-letter NBG code, and this module builds that pacing-mode framework before covering implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and the physiological and electrical-safety interface considerations that separate a device delivering a pacing pulse from one delivering a life-saving shock.

It then compares mechanical versus bioprosthetic heart valve design tradeoffs and covers coronary stent design and the restenosis biology stents are engineered against, closing with the electrical safety considerations specific to implanted cardiac devices that connect directly to the IEC 60601 applied-parts framework in Module 18.
