Drug Delivery Systems

Pharmacokinetics fundamentals, infusion pump mechanisms and free-flow protection, controlled-release and transdermal delivery, and implantable drug delivery.

Every drug delivery device exists to control one or more stages of pharmacokinetics — absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion — and this module builds that ADME foundation, including the elimination half-life concept that sets dosing intervals, before covering infusion pump mechanisms, accuracy requirements, and the free-flow protection safeguards that prevent uncontrolled gravity-driven drug delivery when a pump door is opened.

It then covers controlled-release systems built on diffusion versus erosion kinetics, transdermal patch design and permeation enhancement, and implantable drug delivery via osmotic pumps and drug-eluting implants, closing with the zero-order versus first-order release kinetics distinction that governs how predictably any of these systems deliver drug over time.
