Project 3 · Implantable Battery Sizing

Implantable Battery Sizing

Real Project — a worked battery-life calculation for a hypothetical implantable spinal cord neurostimulator, from current-draw budget to projected service life.

This project sizes the primary power source for a hypothetical implantable spinal cord neurostimulator — a device delivering programmed electrical pulses to the dorsal columns to mask chronic pain signaling — against target specifications of 4 mA stimulation amplitude, 300 µs pulse width, 60 Hz frequency, a realistic 60% duty cycle, 8 µA quiescent/telemetry draw, and a 4-year minimum service life before replacement surgery.

It works through a coulomb-counting current-draw budget, a worked capacity and projected service-life calculation, battery chemistry selection rationale, and the safety and failure-mode considerations specific to an implanted power source, tying directly back to the neurostimulation charge-density constraints built in Module 15 and the cardiac device power considerations in Module 14.
