Project 5 · Sterilization Validation Protocol

Sterilization Validation Protocol

Real Project — a complete ethylene oxide sterilization validation protocol for a hypothetical reusable surgical instrument kit, targeting SAL 10⁻⁶.

This project builds a complete ethylene oxide sterilization validation protocol for a hypothetical reusable surgical instrument kit — a tray of eight hemostatic clamps and four tissue retractors with box-lock hinges and hollow-bore fittings, among the hardest geometries in any tray to sterilize reliably — before it can be released for clinical use.

It works through a bioburden testing plan with a worked population estimate, a biological indicator placement strategy targeting the tray's worst-case locations, a worked overkill-method cycle validation demonstrating the log reduction needed to reach a Sterility Assurance Level of 10⁻⁶, and the validation acceptance criteria spanning BI kill, EtO residual limits, and post-cycle package integrity — directly applying the SAL framework and EtO sterilization principles built in Module 8.
