Real Project: Office Building Fire Alarm Design

A complete worked fire alarm design for a two-story Business-occupancy office building — device layout, battery and voltage-drop calculations, riser, and sequence of operations for the program's baseline commercial project.

The project brief: a two-story office building, roughly 20,000 sq ft, Business occupancy (IBC Group B) — open-plan office floors, a small ground-floor conference/training suite, a server/IT closet with dedicated cooling, and two required egress stairs. There's no defend-in-place complexity like the Hospital project and no mass-notification layer like the School project — this is the plain, general-evacuation design philosophy NFPA 72 assumes by default for a normally-occupied commercial building, which is exactly what makes it the baseline the rest of the program's real-project series builds on top of.

This module walks the whole project end to end the way a real designer would: detection strategy space by space (including why the server/IT closet's dedicated cooling unit gets its own duct detector), the notification layout and NAC zoning, a fully worked battery standby/alarm load calculation and NAC voltage-drop check with this project's real numbers, a riser and Sequence of Operations table, and a closing look at exactly how each of the program's other real projects — School, Hospital, Hotel, Warehouse, Manufacturing Plant, High-Rise, Single-Family Home — deviates from this baseline.
