System Integration

Integrating the BAS with fire alarm, access control, elevators, and lighting — hardwired interlocks vs. protocol-level gateways vs. middleware, the master systems integrator role, and the data-mapping and point-naming challenges every real integrated building runs into.

A real commercial building is not just an HVAC system with a BAS attached — it is a fire alarm panel, an access control system, one or more elevator controllers, and a lighting system, each typically specified and installed by a different trade, that all have to function as one coherent building. This module works through the four systems a BAS integrates with most, why fire alarm and elevator recall interlocks must be hardwired for life safety while access control and most other integration runs at the protocol level or through middleware, and the master systems integrator role that owns the interfaces between systems when no single trade has visibility into all of them.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a fire-alarm-to-HVAC shutdown interlock is never routed through BAS software, and choose correctly between a hardwired interlock, a protocol-level gateway, and middleware for a given integration need — the same judgment Module 14's commissioning process and Module 17's troubleshooting method both assume you already have when an integrated point does not behave as expected.
