Smart Buildings Fundamentals

What actually makes a building "smart," the BAS as the coordinating layer tying sensing, control, and optimization together, the traditional-to-smart spectrum, the business case, and the stakeholders every smart building project depends on.

A smart building is not built from different chillers, air handlers, or lighting panels than a traditional building — it layers pervasive sensing, centralized coordinated control, and data-driven optimization on top of the same physical equipment. This module builds the mental model the rest of the program assumes: the building automation system as the coordinating "central nervous system," where a real building sits on the spectrum from standalone controls to fully optimized, and the energy, comfort, and operational-efficiency drivers behind why owners actually invest in this technology.
