Lighting Controls

Occupancy and vacancy sensing, daylight harvesting, scheduling, 0-10V and DALI dimming, BAS integration, ASHRAE 90.1 and Title 24 code drivers, and commissioning — lighting as a real BAS point type, not an isolated system.

Lighting has historically been treated as its own silo, wired and controlled independently of the HVAC-focused BAS this program spends most of its time on. This module makes the case, and shows the mechanics, for why that separation is a missed opportunity: the same occupancy sensor that turns lights off can drive demand-controlled ventilation, and the same load-shedding command Module 8 covers for HVAC applies just as directly to a networked lighting system during a demand response event.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a private office's manual-on requirement is a code-driven behavioral distinction and not a sensor-technology choice, why a closed-loop daylight photosensor self-corrects for fixture degradation where an open-loop sensor cannot, and what DALI's individual addressing provides that a 0-10V analog dimming circuit structurally cannot.
