3D Modeling Fundamentals

Solid, surface, and mesh modeling; parametric versus direct modeling philosophies; model hierarchy across parts, assemblies, and components; coordinate systems and shared coordinates; file performance; and choosing the right modeling approach for a given deliverable.

Solid, surface, and mesh geometry each answer a different question — real mass properties, complex freeform skin, or reality-capture reference — and parametric versus direct modeling is a genuine trade-off between rule-based, propagating control and fast, history-free editing, not a matter of one approach simply being better. This module works through both distinctions, then through model hierarchy, coordinate systems and shared coordinates, and the file-performance discipline that keeps a large, federated model usable.

By the end of this module you should be able to match a modeling technique, coordinate strategy, and performance discipline to what a specific deliverable actually needs — the same judgment this program's later authoring-software, coordination, and reality-capture modules each apply again in their own more specific contexts.
