Revit Architecture Fundamentals

The Revit project environment, families (system, loadable, and in-place), parametric walls/floors/roofs/doors/windows, views and view templates, schedules as live model queries, and worksharing basics — the modeling foundation every later coordination module builds on.

Revit models are not drawings — they are parametric, data-carrying objects that stay linked to the levels, grids, and family types that define them, which is the single biggest conceptual shift for anyone coming from 2D CAD. This module builds that mental model directly: how levels and grids act as datum infrastructure the whole model depends on, why the three family categories (system, loadable, in-place) are managed so differently, how compound wall/floor/roof structures and host-based doors and windows behave as true parametric objects, and how views, view templates, and schedules all read from the exact same underlying model rather than needing to be kept in sync by hand.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why an unlocked reference plane or a careless in-place family can quietly cause downstream modeling failures, and how the central-and-local worksharing model with worksets keeps multiple people editing one project safely — the collaboration foundation Module 6's multi-discipline linking workflow and Module 7's worksharing-governed BIM Execution Plan both build directly on.
