Real Project: Scan-to-BIM Renovation of an Existing Building

A 1968-built, 42,000 sq ft office building case study — scan planning and registration, point cloud accuracy verified against independent survey control, modeling existing conditions, real as-built discrepancies caught, and element-by-element deliverable LOD.

The project brief: a renovation designed against 1968 hand-drafted drawings that no as-built survey has ever verified, and three undocumented additions since — the exact conditions under which a new partition wall can land inside a column nobody knew was there. This module walks the full scan-to-BIM process a real project would run: worked scan-station planning, registration accuracy, an independent control-point verification, and how existing-conditions modeling and deliverable LOD actually get decided element by element.

You'll see exactly how a 62-station scan is registered and independently verified, two real discrepancies the scan caught against the original record drawings, and why concealed MEP gets modeled at a different confidence level than directly-scanned walls and columns.
