Real Project: Food Processing Plant Automation

A batch beverage plant built on the ISA-88 batch control model, CIP automation, recipe management, and the lot-genealogy traceability a food-safety recall actually depends on.

The project brief: three 2,500-gallon batch tanks, an HTST pasteurizer, and two filling lines, with a dedicated Clean-in-Place skid cleaning whichever vessel or line is currently out of production. Unlike the continuous-process projects earlier in this program, the defining engineering problem isn’t holding a single variable at setpoint — it’s managing repeatable, auditable batches on shared equipment under the formal ISA-88 model, and proving after the fact exactly which raw materials went into exactly which finished product.

This module walks the whole project the way a real batch automation engineer would: the ISA-88 physical versus procedural model split, a worked master-to-control recipe scaling calculation, a worked CIP flow-velocity calculation sizing the supply pump to 4-inch sanitary piping, the legally mandated Flow-Diversion Valve on the pasteurizer, and the lot-genealogy system that turns a food-safety recall into a targeted six-batch pull instead of a plant-wide one.
