Industrial Electrical Fundamentals

Industrial power distribution, three-phase systems, motor circuits, control circuits, control transformers, motor control centers, VFDs and soft starters, protective devices, and grounding — the electrical backbone every automation system is built on top of.

A PLC output doesn't switch a motor directly — it energizes a contactor coil, which closes a much higher-current circuit built from a specific chain of protective and switching devices. This module walks that chain from the utility service down to the individual motor starter bucket, and covers the electrical decisions — wye vs. delta, soft starter vs. VFD, solidly grounded vs. high-resistance grounded — that shape how the rest of this program's control systems actually get wired.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a control transformer gets undersized even when the steady-state VA calculation looks correct — a load-dependent failure mode Module 15's troubleshooting content returns to directly.
