NFPA Standards

NFPA 13, 14, 20, 25, 96, 2001, and 750 — what each standard governs, how a voluntary consensus standard becomes an enforceable requirement through model code adoption, and how to determine which edition actually governs a project.

NFPA develops its standards through a structured, volunteer-committee consensus process — but a published NFPA standard has no legal force on its own. This module covers the reference-in-code mechanism that turns a voluntary standard into an enforceable requirement, walks through the specific standards this program builds on throughout (NFPA 13 sprinklers, NFPA 14 standpipes, NFPA 20 fire pumps, NFPA 25 inspection/testing/maintenance, and the special-hazard standards NFPA 96, 2001, and 750), and explains why the identical design can be compliant in one jurisdiction and non-compliant in the next.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why NFPA 25's maintenance obligation applies to an installed system regardless of which NFPA 13 edition it was originally designed under, and how to correctly determine which code and standard edition actually governs a specific project rather than assuming the newest published edition applies.
