Sprinkler Systems

Wet pipe, dry pipe, preaction, and deluge system types, sprinkler head types and temperature ratings, NFPA 13 spacing and coverage rules, and how a space's occupancy and hazard classification drives which system and layout actually apply.

Every automatic sprinkler system on a real project reduces to a small set of decisions made in this module: which of the four core system types (wet pipe, dry pipe, preaction, or deluge) fits the space's freeze exposure and water-damage sensitivity, which sprinkler head type and temperature rating fits the ceiling environment, and how NFPA 13's spacing and coverage rules translate a hazard classification into an actual sprinkler layout. This module works through all four system types side by side — what problem each one solves and what trade-off it accepts to solve it — before covering head selection, spacing, and occupancy-driven system selection in the same depth.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a double-interlock preaction system requires two independent confirmations before water ever enters the piping, and why that extra layer is reserved for the highest-consequence spaces rather than used everywhere — the same system-selection logic Module 5's hydraulic calculations and Module 12's hazard classification content both build directly on top of.
