Standpipes

Standpipe Classes I, II, and III per NFPA 14, wet vs. dry standpipes, hose connection sizing and pressure requirements, and how standpipe zoning solves the pressure conflict tall buildings create.

A standpipe system gives fire crews an immediate, pressurized hose connection on any floor instead of forcing them to hand-lay hose up a stairwell from street level — a capability automatic sprinklers don't provide and that becomes essential the moment a building grows past a few stories. This module works through NFPA 14's three standpipe classes, the wet-vs-dry distinction and why each is used where it is, hose connection sizing and the minimum-and-maximum pressure requirements every connection has to satisfy at once, and the zoning scheme that resolves those two pressure requirements in a high-rise.

By the end of this module you should be able to explain why a single standpipe riser physically cannot serve an unlimited building height without violating either its minimum or maximum pressure requirement — the exact problem standpipe zoning exists to solve, and one this module connects directly to the fire pump sizing covered in Module 7.
